Golden Land of Myanmar

Myanmar is a country renowned in the world as the Golden Land. It may also be said that it is surrounded by a “Golden Sea” with a long coastline running from north to south, which provides a vital source of the country's natural resources, consisting of valuable energy sources, seafood for subsistence and export, and water resources. It would seem that Mother Nature has kindly bestowed on the Nation a priceless national treasure in the form of the invaluable Myanmar’s Golden Sea.
The Myanmar coastline is 1260.056 nautical miles (2333.624 kilometers) long and may be demarcated into three sections:

  • The Rakhine coastline from the mouth of the Naff River to Maw Tin Point.
  • The Ayeyarwady coastline from Maw Tin Point to the mouth of the Sittaung River.
  • The Tanintharyi coastline from the mouth of the Sittaung River to Bayintnaung Point at Kawthaung.

38% of the country’s population inhabits these coastal areas where nine principal towns are accessible from the sea and a myriad of minor ports are located throughout the coastline. At present, four deep-sea ports are under construction along the coastline. From a regional geopolitical perspective, what may be deemed as a choke point of the sea lanes of the Indian Ocean is located in the proximity of Myanmar seas. The sea route, which intersects the Indian Ocean and leads through the Malacca Straits linking East Asia to the Pacific Ocean, is a vital route for the transportation of cargo and worldwide international trade and commerce. For this strategic reason, the control of navigation through the Malacca Straits has become a primary and important issue for countries in the region.

As an alternate solution, the geographical location of Myanmar is ideally suited to provide an option in the nature of a land bridge, which could help to open up economic trading routes between the countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Thus, it has gained in economic importance.
