Formerly known as the Burma Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (BRNVR) in 1946, it was reconstituted with 74 officers and 763 other ranks, one frigate, and thirteen HDMLs. Days before gaining independence, the BRNVR was reorganized as the Burma Navy on December 24, 1947. Today, the Myanmar Navy serves as the Guardian of the Golden Sea, defending the maritime interests of the nation.
The Navy is committed to transforming from a coastal force into a Three-Dimensional Combat Ready Navy. It aims to become capable of adjacent force projection and a regional blue-water navy. This transformation will enable the Navy to defend not only the coastal waters but also the entire waters extending beyond the exclusive economic zone, thereby safeguarding Myanmar’s territorial waters, and strengthening defense capabilities.
In accordance with the defined Myanmar defense policy as prescribed by the defense mission, our Myanmar Armed Forces are currently carrying out their responsibilities. The Myanmar Navy, entrusted with the security and defense of the seas and coastal regions, is fulfilling its assigned role. To effectively implement these tasks, it will undertake naval operations independently as well as in combination with the Army and Air Force in joint operations when required.
